The 2007 silver salmon season in the Mat-Su Valley is now developing. Forcasts from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game are very incouraging and we expect a solid return to valley streams.
July 10 - 20
Both of our boats have been catching a few silvers on our Deshka River charters over the last 10 days. Silver fishing has been spotty at best but more seem to be appearing daily. We expect the fishing to pick up soon.
July 21
Today I had a morning trip with 4 people to the Deshka River. We fished several of my favorite spots using eggs floated under bobbers. While silvers were hard to find we caught and released several nice king salmon. Some of these fish were chrome bright, loose scale fish that would have been great to keep if a king season extension were in effect. We did not hook any silvers today but I did see a few moving in the river. We have groups going out again tomorrow.
July 22
Both of our boats were out again today on the Deshka River in search of the coho. I had a group of 4 guests and Howard had a group of 5. Both of us worked over our favorite spots up and down the river looking for silvers. My boat managed to catch and keep only one silver salmon although we had chances at several others. We did catch and release several king salmon that took our offering of eggs under bobbers. Once again there were several kings that were chrome bright and had loose scales. We also caught and released several nice rainbow trout. The results in Howards boat were similar. The silvers just have not begun to materialize yet but I expect they will show any day now in larger numbers. We both have groups going out again tomorrow.
July 23
AM - Silvers! Today both of our boats caught boat limits of spunky silver salmon. I had a group of 4 guests and Howard also had a group of 4 people in his boat. The action was great today and everyone caught fish. In my boat we caught silvers, kings, chums, pinks and rainbow trout. Howards boat limited out easilly as well. The number of silvers in the river has definitely picked up although I am not ready to say it is happening full on just yet. We located and caught fish in several locations throught the river until we limited out. Things should continue to get better by the day until we see the peak of the run. My hopes are that this is the beginning of a solid month of fantastic silver salmon fishing in the Mat-Su Valley streams.
PM - This evening Howard had a group of 4 people and they headed out to the Deshka. The trip began at the usual time around 5 PM. He just called in at 8:40 PM and told us that everyone on his boat already has their limit of silvers. The limit on the Deshka in 3 silvers per person. That means they caught 12 silvers in just over three hours! This is looking good! We can only hope this is the sign of things to come. We both have full boats going out in the morning plus we have another group of 4 people going out with another guide. I am looking forward to it.
The silvers have arrived and we have been slammed doing two trips a day. When this happens Howard and I stay out at the Deshka Landing and I do not get a chance to update this report much because there is no internet access available to me there. Fishing has been good to excellent and is building. We should be in for several weeks of some killer silver salmon action. Call us for more info or to book your reservation. 907-357-0131
August 1-3
We have been experiencing some very good to excellent silver fishing over the last few days. The run has developed nicely and finding fish right now is no problem. We have been limiting out the boat on most trips for several days now. Now is the time to book your seats on one of our daily charters going out twice daily from the Deshka Landing.
August 4th
AM - This morning I left the Deshka Landing with a group of 5 friends in the boat and headed down river the Deshka. It did not take long to find a suitable group of silver salmon to anchor up on and that is exactly what we did. As soon as the first bobber hit the water it was under and the action never stopped. It took a little over an hour an a half to net all the silvers we could legally keep including three for me. I was soaking wet from netting and unhooking fiesty fish. It was a great moring of fishing and everyone went home with lots of fish.
August 5th
AM - This morning I went to the Deshka with a group of 4 people. We took a few minutes once we arrived in the river to locate a group of fish and set up on them. There are thousands of fish milling around in the Deshka right now and today was no exception. Once again the bite was not real hot inspite of the fact that we had a large schools laying right in front of us and our bobbers were smack dab in the middle of them. We worked at it and were able to catch a total of six silvers out of a possible twelve before heading back to the dock.
PM - This evening I had a group of 4 ladies in the boat and we set out in a steady rain to Deshka River. Two if these friends had grown up in Alaska all their lives and had never gone fishing and had never caught a fish. What a treat to see them both catch their first fish which were chrome bright silver salmon. We found many fish tonight and once again the bite was less than red hot. We worked several spots and groups of fish and were able to catch seven out of the possible twelve fish. We did have several others on and probably could have limited out if we had gotten hook sets on them. We were using eggs under bobbers.
August 6th
I had a group of 4 in my boat today and we set out for the Deshka River. Once again we quickly found large schools of fish in the lower mile or two of the river. We picked out a group, anchored up the boat close enough to cast to them but not too close to spook them, and baited up the hooks. Soon we were catching silvers almost every cast. We used eggs under bobbers to catch all of our fish today. All of our guests had their limit of fish by 8:30 AM and we were headed for the cleaning table.
We would have had our fish much earlier had it not been for several boats that moved in on us and ran right over the school we were fishing which scattered them and forced us to find another group somewhere else. I wish boaters would use little more courtesy and be more observant when they approach another boat that is anchored up and fishing a particular area. They come over to see why you are catching fish and pay no attention to the fact that they are moving right on top of the palce you were fishing. It is amazing to me! There is plenty for everyone and more people would catch them if they would look with their eyes and spot the fish before approaching an area where people are fishing. I have another group of 4 tomorrow and we plan to fish the Deshka River again.
August 6 - August 16
I have been fishing hard these days doing two trips a day and living out at the Deshka Landing. As I said before I have no internet access there which makes updating this report practically impossible. We have been having a great season even thought there are no where close to the normal amount of fish available in the river systems that I fish. We have been catching limits most every day with few exceptions where we might be one or two fish shy of a limit. When fishing the Deshka River, the limit is three fish per person. We are running both boats both morning and evening each day and plan to continue to do so through August and into the first part of September, as long as the fish hold out. August 17
I went out today with a group of four dear friends. It was a trip to say thanks to these folks because they wrote and recorded the iFishAlaska jingle that is used on all of our radio ad's. We set out to fish several spots on tributaries of the Big Susitna river that have been producing nice catches of silver slamon. We worked our way up and down river fishing the holding spots I know along the way. We worked them over with a combination of eggs floated under bobbers and spinners. We picked off a fish here and a fish there intil we had all but one fish for our limit of silver salmon. Once again we were catching very bright fresh fish many of which had loose scales. It was a very enjoyable morning of fishing.
August 18
AM - I set out once again this morning to the Deshka River with four guests on board. We searched our way upriver until we found fish and began to drift eggs under bobbers. It was a fairly good bite with enough fish to soon have the twelve silvers we were looking for. All but one or two fish were chrome bright loose scale fish that had not been in the river long. We were limit out early. We also caught and released a fish or two on spinners.
PM - My afternon group today was a group of four really nice folks from California. The sun was in and out and it was bright and fairly hot so I was not too optomistic about the bite going out. The water levels are dropping and clearing up on the Deshka and the fish had been hit pretty hard today with boat traffic and fishing pressure. Never the less, we set out for the Deshka and soon found a little slot holding some large and cooperative silvers. We had three in the box fairly quickly and then the bite went off. We fished around several other holes and managed to catch two more nice fish finishing the trip with five silvers out of a possible twelve. We also caught and released one old king salmon and a rainbow trout.
August 19
Today I went out with just two guests in by boat. We ran down to the Deshka River and stopped in one of my favorite spots where we got out of the boat and fished from the bank. We loaded the hooks with salmon eggs and drifted them under bobbers. Soon the bobbers started going down and all three of us had our limit of silver salmon. The fishing continues to be steady for us and we are still catching silvers that are very fresh with loose scales and some sea lice. We are starting to see some fish that are turning although they are still in veryh good shape.
Howard will be taking a group if five tomorrow. We paln to continue to run both bots daily until the fish run out or our guided hunts begin, whichever happens first. Call us at 907-357-0131 for booking or details.
